SUBMISSIONS CRITERIA
We seek innovative, creative and reflective work related to diverse human experiences expressed through prose, poetry, photography, motion media and other art forms from all members and affiliates of the Phoenix Biomedical community. The Phoenix Biomedical Campus includes the University of Arizona, Northern Arizona University and Arizona State University programs, research partners such as TGen, and clinical affiliates across the state. Students, staff, faculty and patients are encouraged to submit. All topics/themes are welcome.
Submissions may be made to the Journal at any time.
Deadlines for inclusion in the annual spring publication will be announced for January of every year.
All submissions must be made through the form linked below (also accessible through the left column menu item “ChART Submission.”
Submissions are limited to three (3) per individual.
Submission Categories:
Prose
Work on all themes and topics appropriate for a general audience will be considered. Maximum of 1500 words*, double-spaced with one-inch margins
Poetry
Work on all themes and topics appropriate for a general audience will be considered. Maximum of 1500 words.*
Visual Arts**
Work on all themes and topics appropriate for a general audience will be considered. If submitting actual sculptures, paintings, etc., a photograph of the piece will need to be submitted for evaluation. When submitting photographs of individuals, the photographer must obtain the rights and permission of those individuals in the photograph by submitting a signed release for each identifiable individual. Please contact CHART should a consent form be needed.Visual arts should not include watermarks or other text indicating artists’ identity. Submit all still images in .jpg format not to exceed 10 GB. Provide a title and an artist statement for each image submitted.
Motion Media**
Video, Film or Animation on any topic or theme appropriate for a general audience will be considered. The Producer must own all rights to the content, including music and graphics. The Producer must have signed consent forms from all talent, including narration. Please contact CHART should a consent form be needed. Provide a title and an artist statement for each project submitted.Submitted files will need to be in the following format: Video: H.264 (MP4) Frame Rate: 24 or 30 FPS Audio: 44.1 kHz

**If your submission exceeds the allowed size of 10 GB, please send it as an attachment to pbc-journal@email.arizona.edu and specify that you have done so in the submission section of the ChArt form.
Submission Review and Author/Artist Notification
All submissions will be peer-reviewed/juried by a board of editors.
All submissions will be reviewed in de-identified form for the purpose of promoting objectivity. (Only the editor-in-chief has access to emailed submissions and redacts identifying information prior to submission to the board for review.)
Submissions that have been published previously in whole or in part by other entities will be still be considered, but please disclose to ChArt if your submission has been previously or concurrently accepted elsewhere.
Every effort will be made to notify submitters of the board’s decision by the last week of February.
All accepted authors/artists will be invited to a catered celebration gallery event and reception at the UA College of Medicine-Phoenix, typically held in mid-March, date tbd.
The published journal will be available for purchase on Amazon.com by the time of the celebration event, and also available as an e-journal. Links will be made available on this website.
Author and Journal Rights All editorial decisions are based on the provided criteria and subjectively assessed quality of the work submitted. By submitting to ChArt, the author affirms that they are the sole author or artist, and maintain all rights to their work. If the submission is accepted for publication, ChArt retains exclusive use of electronic rights for a duration of one year, starting from the date the work first appears on the ChArt website. ChArt indefinitely retains electronic archival rights and the non-exclusive right to reprint the piece once in print or electronic format. ChArt has the right to re-size the images selected to fit design format. The author will retain copyright and the right to be acknowledged as the original author or artist of the work submitted. As a courtesy, we ask that authors acknowledge their publication in ChArt in any subsequent re-publication. By submitting material to ChArt, the author affirms that they have read and agree to all of our submission guidelines. Guidelines and rights may change without notice provided that changes are consistent with the spirit of this Call for Submission.
